Non VMware infrastructure updates
VMware also supports uninterrupted updates for third-party devices, such as shared storage or external networking hardware. To support this, nearly all external connections to such services are configured to provide redundancy. This excludes the compute hosts. These have only one network card (requested by <Customer>) and therefore are not able to provide an uninterrupted update procedure for external network or storage devices.
Table 85. Non VMware infrastructure update impact
Component | Workloads Impacted (Downtime) | Impact (During Update Time) |
---|---|---|
Tintri storage | Management and edge: No | Compute cluster hosts have only one NIC; they will be affected by any Tintri controller reboot/outage. |
ToR switches | Yes | Management, edge, and compute might be impacted due to the fact that there is only 1 ToR switch used in this setup. |
Blade or rack-mount host firmware (BIOS) | No | Cluster capacity might be reduced. |
Blade center firmware (Backplane) | Yes | Since VMs cannot move across availability zones, a chassis upgrade will affect all workloads. |
